Mark is a retired Sergeant of the Colorado State Patrol, who was born in California and grew up in Colorado. He served in the USAF for 8 years before joining the State Patrol. He currently works for AT&T Mobility as a Quality Team Manager in Joplin MO. He has spent a lifetime in service to others and continues to do so through the music of his flute. Mark has always felt a connection with nature, the creator, and the indigenous people of this country. In 2005 while at a Pow-Wow his wife became enthralled with the sounds of the Native American Flute. She purchased a flute as a Gift for Mark. Upon trying it he soon knew that the Flute was the instrument he had been searching for. Since then, Mark has found great success performing at numerous events and sharing the Native American Flute’s history and music. Mark was the former coordinator of the Cascade Flute Circle. These flute circles sit in a circle to symbolize, that, while everyone is different, we are all equals. The environment is one of love and acceptance of all skill levels. Mark’s philosophy is that not only should we share our hearts through the flute with each other, we should learn from each other. He bares his heart and soul in his music through the Native Flute. For this reason the “Bare Heart Flute” was created for Mark by his friend, Jeff Calavan, of the Oregon Flute Store and will be featured on this website and all his upcoming albums. In 2006, Mark was involved with helping to make the first annual Pacific Northwest Flute Quest a success. Again in 2007 Mark sat on the Flute Quest committee until his work took him to another state. Flute Quest is one of the largest Native American Flute Events in the nation, boasting headliner performers every year. Mark graduated as a Certified Native American Flute Instructor from the Seven Directions Program in early 2007. He now instructs at flute workshops and lessons in the Seattle area. Mark recorded his first CD, entitled “Woodsounds” with Jan Michael Lookingwolf which was released in April of 2007. The CD is a well-thought out solo flute recording with melodies that are memorable and heart warming. His second album is due to be released in August. It promises to be a beautifully themed album that will commemorate the Trail of Tears. A portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to the Holbrook Indian School. “Mark’s style of playing is pure, refined, and original. His melodies capture the heart and beautiful spirit of the native flute. He is well on the way to being one of the premier flute players of our times...” Mark’s journey with the Native American flute has been one of joy, healing, blessing, sharing, acceptance and love, unity through diversity, hope, peace and one heart for all mankind. Yet, Mark’s journey has only just begun. His desire is to continue helping others learn the flute through the Seven Directions Program. Mark continues as a volunteer for Flute Quest, and is currently working to bring the healing music of the Native American Flute to all who need it. |
